MLB: Dan Wilson named Mariners manager

Dan Wilson He arrived in Seattle in the mid-1990s and became a beloved player for the Mariners, a team with which he spent 12 seasons behind the plate as a catcher with some of the best teams in franchise history.

But now he’ll take the reins in a role not always appreciated by fans, taking over as manager with 34 games left in the regular season and the team in a downward spiral close to falling out of playoff contention in the American League.

Wilson will be in charge for his first game Friday when the Mariners open a series against the San Francisco Giants. Wilson, 55, was chosen to replace Scott Servais, who was fired Thursday following a 1-8 road series that dropped Seattle to 64-64 after the Mariners led by as many as 10 games in the AL West in mid-June.

Servais was in the midst of his ninth season with Seattle, the franchise’s longest-tenured manager in history. But this is Wilson’s position now and the first time in his career that he has been named a full-time manager.
