The Chicago Cubs signed a one-year contract with the Venezuelan receiver Robinson chirinos, who already saw activity this 2021 season of the MLB with the New York Yankees, a team that released him last July.

Chirinos was immediately activated on the roster of the team and will be available for this Monday’s game against the Philadelphia Phillies. To make room for him on the roster, Chicago nominated fellow catcher Taylor Gushue, who has only appeared in two games since being promoted on June 30.

The Yankees signed Chirinos before the start of the season, however, the catcher suffered a fractured right wrist during the Spring Training that led him to start the season at the Triple-A branch, a team with which he hit .278 (36-10) with a double, three homers and six RBIs before being released in early July.

After being released by the Yankees, Chirinos was able to participate with the Venezuelan national team who tried to get a pass to the Tokyo 2020 Olympics at the Americas qualifying tournament in Florida, USA, as well as the final tournament in Puebla, Mexico. In both tournaments his defensive effectiveness was perfect (1,000) in eight games.

Chirinos signed as a professional in 2000 with the Cubs; he was playing minor leagues until a 2011 trade brought him to the Tampa Bay Rays.
