MJ debate: Marvel, Star Wars & Co. just kids stuff? – Was it better before?

Hardly was the finale of Ms. Marvel gone, a new one Marvel/Disney+series, which seemed to be aimed at a younger target group in marketing, sparked a discussion about the current Marvel-TV compared to the past, which then expanded to include comic films and series in general. What does “younger target group” mean nowadays, and what expectations are aroused and possibly disappointed? What do we all expect today in cinemas and TV in this area?

Here is the course of the discussion, as it took place almost 1:1 (and animated for this debate special) – you are of course welcome to continue the debate in the comments. Frank, Steffi and André, in particular, discussed the issue in the editorial office (in order of entry into the discussion 😉 ), but not only.

Steffi and Frank watched the final of Ms. Marvel watched, the review was thrown out by Steffi, and then Frank opened the discussion with his first short feedback on the finale:

Frank: Hello everyone^^ This gif not only reflects my current state of mind, it is unfortunately also an expression of my opinion Ms. Marvel. Nobody really needed these six episodes.

Mr. MJ: So bad?

Frank: Bad is the wrong word. Rather irrelevant. Nothing really happens. I think 3 episodes would have been enough. And partly it reminds of a series from Disney Channel.

Mr. MJ: Except for a little WandaVision and Loki that’s the case for everyone Marvel-Series like that. Or? It mustn’t lead anywhere, so it’s always just filler elements. That’s my impression.

Steffi (reacting to Frank): Well, I think that’s overkill now. Ms. Marvel is not quite as “Wow” as Loki or Moon Knight, but irrelevant? She introduces a new superhero, nothing more, nothing less. Including their world, background, etc.. I wouldn’t have wanted to see that squeezed into 3 episodes. She’s just a teenage superheroine, which also influences the look and the themes. See also DCs Stargirlthere it is similar.

Frank: I know that the series should be aimed more at younger people. But to be honest, this statement makes me rather angry now (not only in this case). Because to be honest: everyone Marvel-Series and films are aimed at younger people, this is made for 12-year-olds, which is also ok. But then to say: This series in particular is aimed at younger people. So younger? 3 year olds?

My problem is: The Goonies is a children’s film. And a really great one. Compare that with today’s “children’s films” or series. You would actually have to compare the Goonies subsequently miss an FSK 18 age rating. I just find that ridiculous now.

Steffi: Well, younger targeting is meant in the face of a teenage superhero, that is Loki Not, Moon Knight not, and so are the other superheroes of the Marvel/Disney+-Series before not. The previous ones are all grown up and therefore a lot darker and harder in terms of look and themes, and also more grown up. Ms. Marvel is playful, colourful, very social media-heavy – just right for this young superheroine… further on page 2
