Synopsis
Mizrahim is the name given by Israelis to Jews from North Africa and the Middle East, victims, as soon as they arrive in the Promised Land, of a discriminatory system that makes them second-class citizens. . In the 1970s, a revolt movement inspired by the Black Panthers in the United States emerged to defend their rights. Confronted with the mourning of her father, a former member of this movement, Michale Boganim goes to meet several generations of Mizrahim. In the form of a road movie, the film takes an intimate approach to issues of exile and transmission.

I saw a film… about a fact completely ignored (by me) in the history of the construction of the State of Israel… That is to say the massive arrival of Eastern Jews expelled in the contempt and often by violence from their countries of origin (Yemen, Iraq, Tunisia, Algeria, Morocco, etc.)… to arrive in the country of “Milk and Honey” (which is written on the brochure of the ‘office of… settlement)… And there, disillusionment… Welcome in…

The director’s father, Michale Boganim, was part of the Black Panthers in Israel, a movement of protest and revolt born in 1971 against the inferior status of Eastern Jews, the Mizrahim. On the other hand, the Black Panthers of Israel had links with the Palestinians, through the only bi-national party at the time, composed of Arabs and Jews I worked from the absence of my father to …

I knew about the active segregation within the state of Israel since its creation, but I was unaware of such a systematization. From this point of view, the film interested me. However, more than a documentary, or rather less than a documentary, I see in it a militant plea. Why not. The problem is that I would have liked it to be more assumed as such. I understand that there are also Mizrahim who were able…

Tribute to a deceased father
The director’s father, Michale Boganim, was part of the Black Panthers in Israel, a protest and revolt movement born in 1971 against the inferior status of Eastern Jews, the Mizrahim. “The Black Panthers, in the United States , knew about this movement but there was not really a connection between them. In contrast, Israel’s Black Panthers have had ties to the Palestinians, through the only bi-

Funding
The film was made possible thanks to a French production company and Aid to Cinemas of the World and that of the Île de France Region. The director explains: “The project was submitted in Israel and received very little support. It’s a project that I could never have done in Israel. The movie hasn’t been shown there yet and I’m curious about the reaction. As I relate how a discrimination was deployed methodically,

A letter
The film is conceived as a letter addressed by a daughter to her father. A structure that seemed obvious to the director, who was also inspired by an essay by James Bladwin, The next time, the fire, where he addresses his nephew in the form of a letter to talk about discrimination which his father was subjected to. “I found this story of intergenerational transmission about an ongoing reality very beautiful.
