It is noteworthy that four major contenders are in the fray for the 40-member assembly. This includes the ruling Mizo National Front (MNF), Congress, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM). Major exit polls have predicted a tough contest between the three parties. MNF Vice President Vanlaljowma said, ‘Exit polls can say anything. But I am confident that MNF will gain majority on its own and return to power. Zoram People’s Movement President Lalduhoma did not comment on the exit poll and expressed confidence of forming the next government on his own.

Mizoram Congress President Lal Sawta said, ‘We have done our work. I have not seen the exit polls and do not want to comment on them. It is known that in 2018, MNF had ousted Congress from power by winning 26 seats. ZPM, a new regional party formed a year ago, finished second, winning 8 seats, while the Congress, which had won 5 seats, slipped to third. In the Christian dominated state, BJP had registered victory for the first time by winning one seat.
