Mixed Results for Re-Releases in South Indian Cinema

Entertainment Desk December 4, 2023

The re-release of the Malayalam films ‘Sphathikam’ and ‘Manichitrathaar’ had created a new trend. Sphatikam, which was re-released in February this year, collected around 3 crores from theatres. A large number of audience came to see Manichitrathazar which was shown as part of the Keralayam programme.

But reports say that this trend is not working in Tamil and Telugu. All shows of Rajinikanth’s film ‘Muthu’ have been canceled due to lack of audience in theatres. The re-release of the film was announced on Saturday, December 2.

The booking for this has also started earlier. But Telugu media reports that all the screenings of the film in Telugu states have been canceled due to lack of audience. Even when Rajinikanth’s films ‘Basha’ and ‘Baba’ came out, the audience was low.

At the same time, Kamal Haasan’s film ‘Alavanthan’ is the film that is getting ready for re-release in Tamil. The film hit the theaters in 2001 and was a failure. The re-release of the film is on December 8. Producers and theater owners are now worried about whether people will come to see the film.
