Mixed reactions to Weghorst’s performance in Man United’s win over Nottingham Forest

In England, there are different sounds about Wout Weghorst, after Manchester United won 0-2 against Nottingham Forest on Sunday. Most tabloids saw the Dutchman make meritorious appearances, but according to The Sun Weghorst should not have made it to the end of the game.

Weghorst came in against Nottingham after 72 minutes. Not much later, the 0-2 fell, in which the Orange international also played a part: with a good running action, he opened up the center of Nottingham, allowing Diogo Dalot to score. Sky Sports, The Daily Mail in Manchester Evening News give Weghorst a 6 for his performance. The latter medium writes about ‘a lightning-distracting running action’ by Weghorst.

Afterwards, Bruno Fernandes said that he was happy with Weghorst’s substitution. “Wout came in very well. He helped us a lot. Because of his running action, he tricked a piece or two of Nottingham’s players, allowing Dalot to score. Nobody will probably notice that, but this was important work from Wout.”

The Sun however, makes a very different sound. According to the English boulevard newspaper, Weghorst should have been red. ‘Man United flop Weghorst luckily escapes a red card after he lashed out at a Nottingham player in the final phase’, the tabloid headlines.
