Mitsubishi First Japanese Manufacturer to Produce Electric Cars in Indonesia

Jakarta

Mitsubishi finally produces electric cars in Indonesia. Mitsubishi is the first Japanese manufacturer to produce electric cars domestically.

For the first time, Mitsubishi produces electric cars in Indonesia. The electric car in question is the Minicab EV which will fill the kei car class commercial vehicle market. The plan is that this Minicab EV will be sold in Indonesia starting in the fourth quarter of the 2023 fiscal year.

“In 2017, MMKI started production of the Xpander, which is now not only sold domestically in Indonesia, but also exported to support the development of the Indonesian automotive industry,” said Mitsubishi Motors President and CEO Takao Kato in a press release.

With these production activities, it means that Mitsubishi is the first Japanese manufacturer to produce electric cars in Indonesia. Not only that, this is also the first time the manufacturer with the three diamond logo has produced an electric car outside Japan. The Minicab EV production in Indonesia is expected to be able to meet the demand for electric vehicles in the ASEAN region.

Indonesia’s determination as the first country to carry out local production of the Minicab MiEV / L100 EV is a significant step for Mitsubishi Motors, and as a distributor in Indonesia, we are proud to be part of this environmental initiative. With studies that have been previously carried out in Indonesia regarding the efficiency of BEV use in “light commercial vehicle segment, we are ready to start marketing this product in Indonesia at the beginning of next year,” said President Director of PT Mitsubishi Krama Yudha Sales Indonesia Atsushi Kurita.

Before being produced domestically, Mitsubishi had already showcased this electric-powered commercial car several times. President Joko Widodo also tested this car directly on the sidelines of GIIAS 2021. For additional information, the Minicab EV is a vehicle with a monobox design equipped with an EV system that has been proven in the world’s first mass-produced electric vehicle, the i-MiEV.

Additionally, measures such as placing the drive battery under the center of the floor ensure that EV components can be installed without sacrificing the vehicle’s bulky cargo space, while the low center of gravity provides excellent steering stability and an enjoyable ride.
