After the warm relationship with Joe Biden and his people in Athens, Kyriakos Mitsotakis seems to be turning with the same fervor to new president-elect Donald Trump, following other European leaders who did not want him elected, because of his positions on European issues and the Russia-Ukraine war, but turned around after his election.
Thus, shortly after their telephone conversation, the Greek Prime Minister spoke of a “warm climate” with Donald Trump, in the context of the event of the Grant Thornton company entitled “Future Unfold – The Annual Technology Forum”
“Euro-American relations are a bit more complex. Europe – regardless of what happened in the US elections – needs to wake up from the slumber of geopolitical naivety it has entered for years. When President Trump had bluntly told his NATO allies that it was not possible for the US to guarantee security forever and for European countries not to reach the agreed 2% of their GDP as a contribution, he was essentially right. Greece used to give 2% of GDP and now it has reached 3%”, commented Kyriakos Mitsotakis, omitting that Trump wants Europe to pay for NATO precisely so that the USA does not.
The prime minister also found commonalities in economic policy with Trump, specifically in reducing corporate taxes, although Greece already has one of the lowest dividend taxes. “On the economy, I think we will see a policy of further tax cuts and the US will become more capital-friendly. I belong to those who believe that the E.U. it must urgently improve its competitiveness,” he said.
“Greece’s relations with the USA after the election victory of Donald Trump will continue to be excellent”, the prime minister stressed, and that they are relations of a “strategic nature sealed by a series of agreements”.
Earlier, Kyriakos Mitsotakis had a telephone conversation with Donald Trump and invited him to Greece.
