The unprecedented package of sanctions against Russia is actually negatively affecting the European economy as well, Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis said in an interview with CNN.

“Although these sanctions are significant, Europe must be very careful not to allow them to harm Europe more than Russia,” he said, referring to rising energy costs.

Asked about paying the price for the sanctions imposed, instead of waging war, Mitsotakis said: “We pay the price.”

“We all need to rethink our growth forecasts, we are facing significant inflationary pressures as a result of the war, and energy costs are really hurting us,” he added.

Mitsotakis also noted that in addition to the commitment to support Ukraine, there must be a commitment to the citizens, “to make sure that they do not suffer more than they can actually bear.”

According to him, the Russian economy has shrunk by about 10%, adding that “all the achievements that Russia has achieved in the last decade can be erased within a year.”

Regarding the refugee crisis, Mitsotakis commented: “We have been at the forefront of the refugee crisis in the past. That is why we are very sensitive to make sure that we can provide a safe place for Ukrainian refugees.”
