Kyriakos Mitsotakis tried to open up to far-right audiences in the debate with the French writer Pascal Bruckner at the American School of Classical Studies in the context of an event organized by iefimerida.gr, adopting the rhetoric of a “woke agenda”, which he said does not exist in Greece.
Specifically, the prime minister initially said that “we should not confuse the protection of fundamental human rights, which is a pillar of liberalism, with the direction that what we define as woke culture in the US has taken, where the dialogue has become so divisive that it has ceased to be a dialogue,” while adding that unlike the “the concept of tyranny of the majority was advanced by John Stuart Mill in order to ensure that in democracies there is a framework to protect the rights of minorities”, now “we have the tyranny of minorities, who do not allow anyone to challenge their point of view. If you dare to express doubts about their opinion, they “christen” you a fascist, supporter of the patriarchy, or anything else imaginable.”
Finally, he recalled what one of his professors in the US, Harvey Mansfield, had said in 1991: “if you have the right to speak you also have the obligation to listen”.
“I fear that the obligation to listen has been lost in the so-called woke culture in the US, where groups seek to promote discord, anger and conflict, where speech is used not so much to make arguments as to challenge the other. This, in my view, is something very different from traditional liberalism. It is essentially the definition of illiberalism, where a minority tries to impose itself on the majority” concluded Kyriakos Mitsotakis.
