Kyriakos Mitsotakis presented a fictitious picture of the economic situation prevailing in our country, but also of the quality of democracy and the rule of law, in an interview with Proto Thema, just one month before the European elections. In fact, the prime minister did not hesitate to question the reality itself, saying that “Greece is not a protagonist in accuracy, regardless of whether the citizen feels that there is accuracy”.
In particular, the prime minister said about the high prices and punctuality, that “it is encouraging that people finally had enough disposable income to be able to travel. But the answer to accuracy can only be permanent increases in disposable income, nominal wages.
In fact, at a time when households and society have been brought to their knees by precision and due to unfair practices in the market, Mitsotakis said that “we have not yet exhausted the entire quiver of measures that we can have at our disposal. We were on many levels very intrusive, in supplier and supermarket relations.”
Kyriakos Mitsotakis left open the possibility of renewing the term of the President of the Republic, Katerina Sakellaropoulou, saying that “she performs her duties well” and “I have not made any contact for her successor”.

At the same time, regarding the tragedy of Tempe and the world’s belief that there is a government cover-up, the prime minister said that “this saddens me because it is completely inaccurate. It is a lie. There was no cover-up operation. I will say it again in the most emphatic way.
I don’t want to talk more about this issue because I have confidence in the Greek Justice, which has moved with great speed in the Tempe issue. This is something we have to recognize.”
“No issue of democracy in our country”
Regarding the multiple criticisms the government receives about the quality of democracy and the rule of law in our country, Mitsotakis said that “take the front pages of the newspapers today and you will see that most of them are criticisms of the government. There is no restriction on freedom of expression and I would tell you that it is very difficult to take legal action – if you feel that you can be wronged or defamed – against journalists.”
“I will express my displeasure to Erdogan”
Regarding his upcoming visit to Turkey (13/5) and the conversion of the Chora Monastery into a mosque, the Prime Minister stated that “the visit should not be postponed, because it is important to have open channels of communication. And it is much better to go to President Erdoğan myself, to express to him my intense dissatisfaction with this choice of the Turkish Government, than to create a crisis in Greek-Turkish relations, which will cancel the important steps of progress that we have managed to succeed in the last year”.
“The Church unites”
Regarding the absence of tension in the churches during Holy Week, he said that “I think that those who tried to provoke reactions before Holy Week, on the occasion of some choices made at the parliamentary level, found that this attempt fell completely in the vacuum. Things were very quiet in the churches, as they should be. After all, the Church unites and Holy Week does not lend itself to any kind of partisan exploitation.”
Fear of the possibility of high abstinence
Regarding the fear of abstention, Mitsotakis noted that “I believe that as we enter the final stretch of the pre-election period, the pre-election tension and the interest of the citizens will increase. On the other hand, we are well aware that citizens very often do not understand the importance of the European elections, hence there is a concern, not only in Greece but also in Europe as a whole, that we may have a loose vote with low participation.” At the same time, he added that “over 75% of the legislation that is passed in the Parliament, in some way has resulted from initiatives taken in Brussels”.
The forearm at 33%
Regarding the electoral weight of the ruling party, the prime minister said that “New Democracy got 33% and then got 39%.” And if you look at all the European elections historically, there is always a discrepancy – for the big parties at least, for the parties in power – between the percentages they get in the national elections and the percentages they finally get in the European elections. That is why I believe that the measure of comparison should be the previous European elections and this is the goal I have set”.
Finally, Mitsotakis once again used the argument about political stability, stating that “the opposition has used the ballot box of the European elections in order to convince the citizens that we must send a message of political instability to the country. The official opposition leader says it clearly, that “the next day we want to make Mitsotakis’ life difficult”. In this context, the Prime Minister said, “I am raising the gauntlet, so that we can continue our reform work.”
