Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis speaking tonight at a gathering of citizens in Copperpointed out the criticality of the European elections for the stability of the country, emphasized that the responsibility of the second four-year period is very heavy, while he referred extensively to the projects carried out in Evia, but also throughout the country, saying that Greece is turning into a big construction site.
Mr. Mitsotakis referred to the government’s work briefly, and accused the opposition of wanting, through the European elections, to cause some kind of turmoil, to destabilize and delegitimize the government, and emphasized that “we must not give anyone the pressure to question the course of the country. We must fight apathy and indifference and rush to the polls.”
Referring to the local projects, he noted among others the bypass of Chalkida which – as he said – will start soon, the bypass of Vasiliki “which will be implemented”, and the vertical road axis of northern Evia which, as he said, “is a non-negotiable priority” for the so does the government. He expressed his satisfaction with the increased tourist traffic of the Easter days in Evia, made a comparison with the days of pessimism after the devastating fires and added that “we are doing politics for the citizens”.
The prime minister blamed the opposition for its tactics and said that “we should ask ourselves if we want a dialogue with toxicity and insults, or talk about the real demands of the European elections”.
Mr. Mitsotakis said that the upcoming European elections are very important and the participation of citizens is more imperative than ever and they should not be treated lightly.
As he said, the world of 2024 is very different from that of 2019, and he made references to what is happening in Ukraine and the Middle East, while at the same time Europe is called upon to have an active presence and find its footing.
What will be done in the European Parliament matters for the future of all of us, the Prime Minister said and added that Europe will be called upon to make decisions to compete with China or secure resources to support citizens or fall behind in global competition. As Greece, we must play an essential role, he said and mentioned that 36 billion euros came to our country with the Recovery Fund, which are available now, and with which, among other things, health centers throughout the country are being upgraded. He linked the European elections to whether we will have a second recovery fund to finance our needs, and said that we see Europe’s footprint everywhere we look around us, Europe is present and must be present after the European elections. ND is the largest party of the EPP and the EPP is the largest party in Europe, said Mr. Mitsotakis, pointing out that the Greece of 2024 has nothing to do with that of ΄19 or ΄15. “From a black sheep first, now we are being counted and listened to” he said and called on the people to support the ND because it knows how to claim what it should from the EU.
“You also have to support because the opposition wants to shorten the ND and Mitsotakis, to cause some kind of unrest and to question the legitimacy that the citizens gave us. We should not do them any favors. The message that must come out of the ballot box is that the ND is powerful, for the stability of the country,” said Mr. Mitsotakis.
He briefly mentioned the government project: He spoke of the postal vote where 200,000 fellow citizens will take advantage of “this tool for deepening democracy” and added that it was done only with the votes of the ND. He spoke about the non-state non-profit universities, the increase of the minimum wage to 830 euros with a target of 950 euros, the recovery of investment grade, the Fofi Gennimata program for the prevention of breast cancer, and said that about 20,000 women were diagnosed with breast cancer that they didn’t know about, because the state gave them a free mammogram, and they will get better because they diagnosed it early. He talked about the reduction of unemployment by 9 units, and said that while in 2019 citizens went to the offices of deputies and asked for work, today employers go and ask for workers.
He finally referred to his upcoming trip to Ankara on Monday and said he is going “with absolute confidence, and consistency on national lines”. He emphasized that today Greece is much stronger defensively and geopolitically with a framework of strong alliances, and looks to the future with confidence.
“All this was done with great effort. We must not give anyone the pressure to question the course of the country. We must fight apathy and indifference and rush to the polls,” said Mr. Mitsotakis. Finally, he pointed out that ND is the only party with roots in society, and this year it celebrates its 50th anniversary, which means – as he said – that “we have done something right. On the evening of June 9, we will celebrate together another great victory of the ND”.
