At the EPP conference against the backdrop of the upcoming European elections, Mr Kyriakos Mitsotakis he “praised” his government, saying characteristically that “the country I was called to govern, when I was first elected in 2019, was considered by many to be the ‘sick’ of Europe” while adding that “who could believe that in a little more than four years could Greece get from where it was to where it is today? Our credit rating has been restored, investment is at record levels, the Economist hails us as country of the year. I can tell you that we would not have been able to achieve this without the significant European support.”
All this at a time when the accuracy is reaping the households and a huge part of the society, cannot afford the monthly expenses.
Support for the candidacy of Ursula von der Leyen
At the same time, Kyriakos Mitsotakis confirmed his support for her Von der Leyen and “deified” the EPP stating that “first, we should, as the EPP, be really proud of what we have achieved in the last five years. It was not a given, it took a lot of effort to bring Europe to where it is today. And we, the EPP, were at the forefront of all these efforts to prepare our European Union for the new reality we face today.
I want to personally congratulate Ursula for her part in this success and for her steadfast leadership in the midst of serious and unprecedented global challenges: a pandemic that shook the entire planet, a barbaric and illegal war of aggression in the heart of Europe, an energy crisis which threatened to destabilize our economies.”
It is noted that Ursula von der Leyen was officially nominated by the EPP for a second five-year term at the presidency of the European Commission, as she was supported by 400 delegates, while 89 voted against.
Europe’s stance on the war in Ukraine
Also, the prime minister said about the war in Ukraine that “never before has the EU reacted in this way: imposing extensive sanctions on Russia, constantly supporting, militarily and financially, Ukraine”. At the same time, regarding the powerful explosion in the context of his meeting with the president of Ukraine, he noted that “I was in Odessa yesterday with President Zelenskyy when a Russian ballistic missile hit the port during our visit to his facilities.
And, I believe, we are all sending a message to the Kremlin: We are not going to be afraid. We will continue to support Ukraine and its brave citizens as long as necessary. And of course, we remain completely united in our determination to do so.”
