Mitma awarded the works for the modernization of the Huerna motorway tunnel for 56.3 million euros

The Ministry of Transport, Mobility and Urban Agenda (Mitma) awarded the works contract for the modernization of the Barrios, Cosera, Oblanca, El Negrán, Vegaviesga, Pando and Entrerregueras tunnels for 56.3 million euros ( VAT included). located on the AP-66 Campomanes-Len highway, in the provinces of Asturias and Len.

The AP-66 Campomanes-Lén motorway is a high mountain motorway, with a route of 76 km, of which 8.8 km correspond to the aforementioned seven tunnels, all made up of two one-way traffic tubes with two or three lanes for sense, highlighting the El Negrón tunnel of 4,166 meters in length.

The Ministry recalls in a press release that the control and surveillance of the tunnels is carried out from the Control Center located in the La Ablaneda area, located near the northern mouth of the El Negrón tunnel.

Although the tunnels currently present “favourable” operating conditions, Mitma deems it necessary to carry out this action to adapt its structures, in line with the provisions of the Royal Decree on the minimum safety requirements for the tunnels of the trans-European road network.

The intervention is part of the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan (PRTR), which foresees the investment of up to 357 million euros (excluding VAT) from NextGenerationEU funds to modernize more than 80 tunnels and enhance the protection of wildlife and vulnerable users of the Statale Networking through actions distributed throughout the country.

Among other actions, through this works contract, improvements are promoted in emergency exits, signage, beacons, lighting, ventilation, electrical installation, fire protection, CCTV surveillance systems, drainage of toxic liquids or traffic management , etc.

The planned interventions include the construction of eleven new connecting galleries between the tubes of the Barrios, Oblanca, El Negrán and Pando tunnels; renovation of electrical substations in Río Pajares and Negrán Sur and a new substation in Entrerregueras; All tunnels will be equipped with external mobile motorized cameras to monitor the entrances and an internal system of closed circuit television (CCTV) and DAI (Automatic Incident Detection) system are designed by processing the received images.

In addition, the updating of the equipment of the Control Center of La Ablaneda is included, through the implementation of the servers and workstations necessary to allow real-time control of all the structures of the tunnel, both of the existing ones which will be maintained , such as newly installed ones, through a centralized control system for supervision and data acquisition (SCADA).

With this, it seeks to optimize the functioning of the facilities, detect elements that malfunction and implement action plans in the event of an accident.
