Los Angeles (ANTARA) – A new design by a research team at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in the northeastern State of Massachusetts, United States (US), can utilize up to 40 percent of the sun’s heat to produce hydrogen fuel. clean, explained the team in a study published on Monday (16/10).
In the study published in the Solar Energy Journal, MIT engineers outlined a conceptual design for a system that could efficiently produce “solar thermochemical hydrogen.”
The system harnesses the sun’s heat to split water directly and produce hydrogen, a clean fuel that can power long-distance trucks, ships and planes, while emitting no greenhouse gas emissions in the process.
Conventional systems for producing hydrogen rely on fossil fuels, but the new system uses only solar energy.
“We see hydrogen as the fuel of the future, and there is a need to produce it cheaply and on a large scale,” said Ahmed Ghoniem, the study’s lead author and a professor of mechanical engineering at MIT.
