The mayor of Kyiv Vitali Klitschko attacked Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky for the conduct of the war in the country. That’s what he did in an interview for the Swiss news bulletin 20 Minuten, which was then widely covered on Sunday in Russia and Ukraine, DPA reports.
“People are asking why we weren’t better prepared for this warwhy Zelensky denied until the end that it would come to this”, Klitschko said in the interview that aired on Saturday. There was too much informationwhich did not correspond to reality”, said the 52-year-old former world boxing champion, accusing the president of “mistakes”.
He called for honesty about the real situation in Ukraine after the Russian invasion.
“Zelenski is paying for the mistakes he made,” Klitschko said.
“Of course we can euphorically lie to our people and our partners, but you can’t do that forever, he said, while offering clear support to Ukrainian Chief of Staff Gen. Valery Zaluzhny, who drew criticism a month ago when he said that the war is at a stalemate.
“He told the truth, Klitschko said in the interview. Sometimes people don’t want to hear the truth, but at the end of the day he is responsible. He explained and justified what the current situation is.”
Klitschko declared against the political games in Ukraine. There should not be internal conflict in a country that is fighting for its existence, and for this reason he refuses to discuss his personal plans and expresses support for Zelensky, he said.
“Today, the president has an important function and we must support him until the end of the war. But when the war is over, every politician will have to give an account of his successes and mistakes,” Klitschko said.
In the interview Klitschko thanks Germany for providing anti-aircraft systems, but was critical of the refusal to provide Taurus long-range cruise missiles.
Without giving up, Zelensky admitted the failure of the counteroffensive
Ukraine’s war with Russia is entering a new stage
The war with Russia is in a new stage, with winter expected to complicate the fighting after the summer counteroffensive, which failed to produce the desired results due to the persistent shortage of weapons and ground forces. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said this to the Associated Press.
Despite the setbacks, however he assured that Ukraine will not surrender.
“We are already in a new phase of war, and this is a fact. Winter in general is a new phase of war,” Zelensky emphasized.
Asked if he was happy with the results of the counter-attackhe answered complexly.
“Look, we will not back down, I am satisfied. We are fighting with the second (best) army in the world, I am satisfied,” the Ukrainian leader said, referring to the Russian armed forces. However, he added: “We’re losing people, I’m not happy about that. We didn’t get all the weapons we wanted, and for that I can’t be happy, but I can’t complain too much either.”
Zelensky expressed concern that the war between Israel and “Hamas” threatens to overshadowed the conflict in Ukraine as competing political agendas and limited resources put the flow of Western military aid to Kiev at risk.
