Mistake by Sergio Pérez in Austrian Grand Prix Practice Session Surprises Martin Brundle

today, 4:54 pm | by Stephen Koolschijn

Martin Brundle has looked with surprise at Sergio Pérez’s mistake during the first free practice session of the Austrian Grand Prix. The Mexican lost control of the RB19 after only a few minutes after hitting the grass with his left front wheel when braking before turn five. The 33-year-old ended up in the wall and his session was over after that. Brundle doesn’t understand how this could happen.

Pérez has underperformed in recent GPs. The Mexican has not been able to reach Q3 since the Monaco Grand Prix and he was only on the podium in Austria. Pérez wanted to recover at the Hungaroring, but after three minutes in FP1 things went wrong again. The six-time GP winner hit the grass on his first fast lap before finishing in the wall. His session was over. Brundle has a hard time understanding how Pérez allowed this to happen.

‘I can’t reach it with my head. It is really a beginner’s mistake,” the former Formula 1 driver responds to Sky Sports. “I think back to his brilliant wins earlier this year in Saudi Arabia and Azerbaijan, and his absolutely brilliant win last year in Singapore on a drying track, one of the most challenging races I’ve seen in a long time. There he was perfect. And then he does this’, Brundle does not hide his surprise.

Perez under pressure?

Brundle then looks for an explanation and the Briton can actually only find one. “I can only assume it’s the pressure. Not only did he hit the edge of the grass or the white line, he was three feet on the grass. I don’t get it at all. Sergio (Pérez, ed.) Has been so rock solid throughout his career. He hasn’t been that dynamic and he sometimes makes mistakes, but he’s fast, consistent and he knows how to keep the tires intact. All these mistakes are so at odds with the rest of his Formula 1 career.
