A Missouri man has been charged with voluntary manslaughter after mistakenly shooting his mother, tragically resulting in her death.

Jaylen Johnson, a 25-year-old resident of Olivette, stands accused of causing the death of his mother, 56-year-old Monica Johnson-McNichols. The incident occurred at their residence on Huron Drive on Thursday.

Charges and Arrest

Based on the evidence, Jaylen Johnson now faces charges of voluntary manslaughter and armed criminal action. Following his arrest, he is currently held at the St Louis County Jail on a $100,000 bond, as confirmed by the Olivette Police Department.

In a statement, the police said, “The City of Olivette is saddened by this tragic incident and offer our sincere condolences to the loved ones of Monica Johnson-McNichols.”

The Incident

Both Jaylen Johnson and his mother resided in the same home on Huron Drive, setting the scene for the unfortunate shooting.

Authorities responded to a shooting report at around 7:20am last Thursday. Upon arrival, they discovered Ms. Johnson-McNichols with a gunshot wound. Although emergency responders made efforts to save her life, she was pronounced dead at the scene.

According to law enforcement officials, Jaylen Johnson contacted the emergency services immediately after the shooting, expressing deep distress over what had taken place.

“He hasn’t stopped crying,” attorney Mr. Goldstein told the Post-Dispatch. “Jaylen loves his mom and his mom loved him … Jaylen immediately called 911 and immediately called his grandfather and said he can’t believe this happened,” Mr. Goldstein shared with local TV station KSDK.

Background Information

Contrary to any criminal history, Mr. Johnson was a college athlete with a promising future, as explained by his attorney. The tragic incident occurred as a result of him mistakenly identifying his mother as a home intruder. After having been previously robbed at gunpoint, Mr. Johnson kept a weapon for the purpose of self-defense.

Due to an ongoing investigation, the police have refrained from releasing further information at this time.
