“Mission accomplished”

Mexico City. Thank you, thank you from the bottom of my heart! “I retire with the pride and honor of having served a good, hard-working, intelligent, fraternal people, heirs to the great virtues and values of the ancient Mexicans,” emphasized President Andrés Manuel López Obrador in his latest Government Report.

In these six years, “a lot has been done, by everyone and from below” and now it is essential to continue fighting to strengthen what has been achieved and continue building a “new, generous and eternal homeland,” he stressed.

Excited by the shelter he received yesterday in a packed Zócalo in the capital, the president stressed that the ideology of his government was based on the postulates of the fighters for Independence, the Reform and the Revolution, and praised that he always maintained communication with the people.

“We have never divorced ourselves from the people” and it has been demonstrated, he added, that it is possible to govern for the benefit of all Mexicans “without accepting recipes, models or agendas imposed by international financial organizations, or by hegemonic powers of any political or ideological persuasion.

Although throughout the six-year term “we were attacked and slandered by our adversaries as has rarely been seen in our history, we never persecuted, censored or repressed anyone.” That is why “it is a source of pride to have been able to demonstrate that transformation can be achieved with the support of the people, even if we are faced with oligarchic powers and media or manipulation that in other times imposed ways of thinking and acting in benefit of their interests.”

He stressed that he is also satisfied because he will hand over the baton to Claudia Sheinbaum. Among those present there was a mixture of joy and nostalgia for what had been achieved and because it was the beginning of the farewell. Photo by Marco Peláez

He pointed out that during his mandate, it became clear that there was “an urgent need to separate economic power from political power and for the government to represent everyone, rich and poor, country people and city people, believers and non-believers. We must not forget that, we need to continue with this policy, an authentic democracy, not a simulation,” because what the oligarchs want, he added, is power without people. To hell with that! he exclaimed.

Facing his successor, the president-elect, Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo, –whom he cheered on three times–, members of his cabinet and the next one, governors of the 4T and citizens who have supported him in his fight, López Obrador highlighted that in this administration “we advanced in the revolution of consciences and the foundations were laid to consolidate the new policy called Mexican humanism, which in essence is to recognize and care for those below, who remained forgotten and humiliated.”

However, he warned that “even with all that has been achieved, we are still suffering from a backwardness due to the long and stormy period in which the government was in the hands of insensitive oligarchs, who never cared about the well-being of the people and only dedicated themselves to plundering and preventing the progress with justice of those of us who were born and live in this paradise called Mexico.”

In his message, the president recalled that six years ago he began his government with some reforms to the Constitution, “to the extent possible,” to promote laws that would allow us to stop the “anti-popular, subservient and corrupt policy that had been imposed and legalized by the predominance of an oligarchic power with the appearance of democracy.”

And after recalling that on February 5 he presented a package of 20 more reform initiatives, a “nooo!” was heard from the Zócalo floor when he mentioned that his term is about to end.

“I want to confess here, from the main public square in Mexico, where we have so often gathered during our fight for justice and democracy: I am going to retire with a clear conscience and very happy,” for having managed, with the support of millions of Mexicans, to reduce poverty and inequality in the country. But I am also “leaving with peace of mind” because the presidential sash will be handed over to Sheinbaum Pardo.
