Missing Serbian toddler Danka Ilic (1) has been found dead in a landfill. Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić confirmed this. Two men have also been arrested who have confessed to the toddler’s murder.
Almost 2-year-old Danka disappeared last week on Tuesday, March 26, from her parental home in Bansko Pole, near the eastern city of Bor in Serbia. Immediately after her disappearance, a major search operation was launched, with police, fire brigade and volunteers combing the area. Without result. Even Interpol was called in and an investigation notice was sent out.
A few days later a hopeful tip came in. A Serb in Austria was quite sure he had seen the girl in Vienna with two Romanian women. He took a video of the trio and sent it to the police. But in the end it turned out not to be about Danka.
The girl was already dead by then. This became apparent on Thursday when the case suddenly gained momentum. Serbian President Vučić announced that the girl had been found dead. “We have bad news for Danka. The police have arrested two people who, if I understand correctly, killed little Danka,” he said. Those two men, whom the president called “monsters,” are believed to work for a local utility company and were near the family’s home at the time of the disappearance.

Hit by a car
According to local media, the toddler wandered away from the garden of the house and ended up on a road. There she was hit by the two men at high speed. Instead of helping the girl, they allegedly killed her and put her in the trunk of the car. They then drove to a landfill and dumped her body there. According to some local tabloids, the men went to the dump in the days that followed to better hide the body.
The men were previously arrested because they were spotted near the house at the time of the disappearance. But they were quickly released as there was no evidence they had anything to do with the girl. Until a forensic analysis was performed on their car. The men had tried to thoroughly clean the car with chemicals, but experts from the lab were still able to find traces of the girl’s blood.
The men were then arrested. The Interior Ministry confirmed that the two suspects have confessed, but also said the search for the toddler’s body was ongoing.
