Missing student Michael (22) found in canal in Groningen: ‘Awful, so young’ | Inland

The police in the Northern Netherlands reported on Thursday afternoon after an investigation that no crime had been committed. “We assume a fatal accident,” said police spokesman Thijs Damstra. The police ask that scattered photos and calls be removed from social media again.

The 1.95 meter tall Michael Bos played basketball at the well-known Groningen student basketball association GSBV De Groene Uilen-Moestasj. The club had already posted a concerned report about their missing player on the website, urging them to report any information.

President Lonneke Mulder of De Groene Uilen-Moestasj said on Thursday afternoon: „He played for men’s team Moestasj MSE 3. We are very shocked by what happened. Not many reports came in on the call (about the missing person… So we held on tight, but we don’t know more than the public.” It’s still fresh for the Martini city basketball players. The board does not want to speculate about what may have happened on the fatal night. “That’s for the police. Out of respect for Michael’s family and privacy, we don’t want to say much about Michael right now.” On the website of the basketball association, the board writes that “Michael’s positivity, enthusiasm and fun will be missed throughout the association.”

Days wanted

In addition to the police, the search and rescue team also helped on these days. On Thursday morning, a sonar probe of the National Team Underwater Searches was searched and a person was spotted underwater. The area along the waterfront on the Marwixkade was then cordoned off for several hours to allow the specialists to do their work.

It was quiet around the scene of the accident. Some Groningers saw all the effort along a normally quieter strip with greenery, cycling and walking paths and houses along the water. Michael Bos was last seen on Monday night between 3 a.m. and 4 a.m. He left a house on Brugstraat, a little further in the center, on foot, and walked towards the long Paterswoldseweg. He was reportedly not wearing a coat in the cold night at the time. The site is a few hundred meters away, near the buildings where, among other things, the Groninger Archives are located. At the end of the afternoon flowers were laid out.
