Missing Jane still texted ‘Please, please can you help me?’

Family and friends of Jane Vermelis (38) from Den Bosch are distraught. “We have never seen Jane so off the map as last weekend,” says her father Hans Vermelis. “A friend even slept with her on Saturday so that she was not alone. On Sunday morning she left unseen and we have lost track”, it sounds a bit desperate from Hans’ mouth.

“At least 25 friends and the family immediately went looking for them on Sunday,” says Monique, who has been her stepmother since Jane’s ninth year. According to Monique, Jane was doing well until something happened for two weeks that left her completely upset. “We think something happened at work. She called in sick on Thursday.”

The police also take Jane’s disappearance very seriously and will send out an urgent missing person message on Monday. Camera images are viewed, sniffer dogs are deployed, a helicopter with heat sensors and a boat with sonar equipment. The most important point of departure is camera images showing Jane as she walks towards Vught without a coat.

Her father also suspects that something has happened at work. “She has immediately submitted her resignation. She would have a conversation about that last Monday because her employer does not want to lose her. They are very satisfied with her, we have been told.”

Jane works with elderly people with dementia in the Sint Jozefoord in Nuland. “She had a great time there”, stepmother Monique knows. “The residents also love her. We don’t know what happened there and Jozefoord also says they don’t know. We only know that Jane has completely lost her way and called in sick.”

Jane and her father hadn’t been in touch for some time. “The fact that she called me last Saturday in a panic is only a sign that Jane was really bad. She really had to mentally step over a threshold. I took her to my house that Saturday but there was She could barely make sense of her story. She cried a lot and then stared blankly ahead again. She didn’t want to stay but would rather go back to her own house where a friend would receive her. That happened. Yet she is ran off in the morning without a phone, money and coat.”

Meanwhile, friends and family have a stomachache over Jane’s disappearance. They are happy with the help of the police and their searches. Unfortunately, it is not yet any news. “All eyes and ears that know about Jane’s disappearance are welcome. We are so very worried and concerned,” says Monique.

It is clear to her immediate environment that Jane must have felt desperate. She also sought help from authorities. “She has physically knocked on Reinier van Arkel’s door, who happens to be in her street,” says father. “She was given tranquilizers at the GP post on Saturday evening”, father continues. “We even see that she sent an accompanying psychologist from her childhood a text message on her telephone: ‘Please, please, can you help me?’ He turned out to be on vacation.
