Kayla Unbehaun has been missing since 2017. On Saturday, she was found alive after being recognized in the Netflix series.
Kayla Unbehaun (15) was nine years old when she disappeared in July 2017.
The day before, Kayla had watched the Fourth of July parade with her mother, Heather Unbehaun. The mother is said to have told the family that the two were going on a camping trip, according to the report Sky News.
It was agreed that the father Ryan Iserka should collect Kayla on the fifth of July, but she and her mother never showed up, writes Sky News.
Earlier that year, Iserka had received full custody of her daughter, while the mother only had partial visitation rights, according to CNN.
The mother has since been suspected of having kidnapped Kayla, but the case has remained unsolved – until now.
Recognized from the Netflix series
Kayla’s case received a lot of attention, and was discussed in the “true crime” Netflix series “Unsolved mysteries”.
From this series, Kayla was recognized in a store in Asheville, North Carolina last Saturday, according to CNN.
This is over 1,000 kilometers from Illinois, where Kayla disappeared.
A customer in a store is said to have recognized Kayla, and notified a store employee, who called the police.
On the same day, Heather Unbehaun was arrested and she will appear in court in July.
“Overjoyed”
The National Center for Missing & Exploited Children shared an announcement on Iserka’s behalf.
“I am overjoyed that Kayla is home safely,” they write. Furthermore, Iserka thanks for all the help in finding Kayla.
He asks for peace to get to know each other again and be able to find his way in a new existence.
