Missing entry fee in the double-digit million range: Berlin Zoo dismisses employees due to corona losses

The Berlin Zoo has dismissed twelve employees who work in the cash desk and ticket control. The cause is the millions lost due to the corona pandemic. The spokeswoman for the zoo, Christiane Reiss, confirmed a report by the “BZ” on Friday. According to this, an external service provider should take over the checkout and control from the summer.

As Reiss explained, the zoo lacked entry revenues in the double-digit millions last year. For 2021 too, millions are expected to be lost. The zoo, on the other hand, got through the Corona year better, also because it is not so dependent on tourists. In the zoo, their own staff will continue to work at the cash registers and access control.

According to the spokeswoman, the terminations relate only to the zoo, not the zoo. Three of the twelve employees could be accommodated in other areas of the zoo as well as in the zoo. The zoo employs a total of 290 people.

Reiss also announced that the zoo is currently drawing on reserves that were actually planned for the “urgently needed renovation of the ape house”. This project, like the construction of a new elephant house, is now “in the distant future”.

A good four weeks ago, the management of the zoo and animal park reported massive financial losses. “We are missing half of the sales. According to preliminary estimates, we expect a loss of around twelve million euros for 2020,” a spokeswoman said.
