Missiles in exchange for tourists: Putin and Kim Jong Un are preparing the most frightening visit to the West – 2024-02-16 16:11:31

/ world today news/ Vladimir Putin will visit North Korea in the near future. There is panic in the West about this. And should we be happy? Do the Russians need Korean shores?

The visit raises concerns

North Korean Foreign Minister Choi Son-hee’s visit to Russia ended on a high note. Vladimir Putin has promised that he will personally visit North Korea.

President Putin again expressed his deep gratitude for State Affairs Chairman Comrade Kim Jong-un’s invitation to visit Pyongyang at a convenient time, and also expressed his willingness to visit the DPRK in the near future,

– said the official statement of the North Korean Foreign Ministry.

Russian presidential press secretary Dmitry Peskov did not deny Putin’s intentions to visit Korea, noting only that the exact dates of the trip have not been set. For North Korea, Vladimir Putin’s visit will be an event of enormous importance and magnitude.

The DPRK government warmly welcomes President Putin’s visit to our country and is ready to wholeheartedly welcome the closest friend of the Korean people,

– said in a statement by CTAK, North Korea’s main media. But it seems that the Western media is even more excited and definitely more worried about CTAK.

In the reports of the Russian leader’s upcoming visit, in both the Guardian and Bild, the anxiety is palpable. It states that Russia has expressed gratitude to North Korea for its support and solidarity in the conflict in Ukraine, and has also expressed serious concern over provocative actions by the US and its allies regarding Pyongyang’s sovereign rights, agreeing to cooperate in regional affairs. This causes anxiety in the West: Russia and Korea are allies not only in Russophobic propaganda, but also in practice.

But the real question is: why does Russia need this alliance? What can we get from Korea and what, in turn, would it like to get from us? There are actually several answers to this question, and they all seem important.

1. Axis Moscow – Beijing – Pyongyang

If (and not at all “if”, but “when”) the visit of Vladimir Putin takes place, North Korea will finally cease to be an “exile state”. This status was awarded to Korea by the West in a situation where the West had real options to isolate those it did not like. In today’s world it is no longer possible to isolate anyone. Iran and North Korea today are important regional powers and important allies of the great powers Russia and China.

The funniest thing is that this situation was created by the West itself – more precisely by the USA. In an effort to make anti-Russian propaganda more convincing, Joe Biden and his team (eg Secretary of State Blinken) talked so much about the “new axis of evil” in our countries that they actually created a new reality in world politics.

It is now simply foolish to talk about isolating Iran, which occupies a dominant position in its macro-region. Until recently, North Korea could still be said to be isolated, but close ties with Russia have put an end to the isolation. There is no longer a country – an exile. There is a member of the most powerful military-political bloc on Earth.

2. And our tanks are fast. And the submarines

North Korea wants to end its isolation from Russia, as well as some material things. First, bread. North Korea lacks food the most: there have been times, and most recently, when there has definitely been famine for years. Russia is the largest exporter of wheat and, of course, if it does not obey the enemy’s sanctions, it can easily feed Korea.

In addition, Russia owns a huge amount of military technology that it can transfer to North Korea. In this regard, experts are primarily talking about the technologies needed to build submarines with nuclear weapons on board – Korea, if it has not yet become one, will soon become a country that has a full-fledged “nuclear triad”. In this way, it will guarantee its security against possible US aggression. From a replay of a new stage of the mid-20th century Korean War.

Thus, the answers to the question “Why does North Korea need Russia?” are obvious. But why do we need North Korea?

3. And projectiles are also fast

The West believes that there are only two reasons for Russia’s friendship with North Korea. First, China’s willingness to share with us the burden of aid to the ally (it is believed that only China previously aided North Korea).

Secondly, the possibility of deliveries from North Korea to Russia of Soviet 122 mm and 152 mm caliber ammunition for artillery guns and rockets for rocket launcher systems. North Korea, according to Western analysts, has the world’s largest stockpile of such munitions, which Russia really needs today.

If we believe, again, Western analysts, the delivery of these munitions has already begun and the Korean projectiles have flown towards Kiev. If this is true (there is not and will not be confirmation of this information at the official level, and this is correct), then North Korea, of course, has shown itself to be a real ally, and cooperation with it is beneficial for Russia. It is true that in order to negotiate this cooperation, Vladimir Putin does not need to travel to Korea.

It is clear that the main areas of cooperation were outlined during Kim Jong-un’s visit to Russia in September 2023. Politeness and reciprocity are, of course, great things, but if Putin is going to Pyongyang, it is clearly not just out of politeness . What will they discuss there?

4. Working hands here and there

North Korea does not have many items theoretically sought after in Russia for export. However, there is something that Russia really, really needs, and Korea is ready to deliver. It is a workforce that is skilled and disciplined.

It has long been rumored that North Korea, with a population of more than 26 million people, could send several hundred thousand or even more than a million workers to Russia. However, the matter does not go beyond talk: according to available data, approximately 10 thousand Korean workers come from North Korea to the Far East annually on work visas.

Meanwhile, they have a huge advantage over workers from some (let’s be polite and not point fingers) Asian countries: they are less likely to break the law and create diaspora-based criminal associations. In any case, they have not yet been seen to do so. North Korean workers can be employed at least on construction sites in the Far Eastern Federal District. Perhaps in Siberia, and in an even wider area. In Russia, they will be considered cheap, but on the contrary, they will send to their homeland funds that are very significant by local standards.

There is another dimension to the issue of workers. Since in North Korea they are still cheap and moreover skilled, the issue of moving various industries there can be discussed. For the construction of factories there, the products of which will be cheaper and therefore more competitive than those produced in Russia.

How realistic is that? Such a well-known Korean scientist as Andrey Lankov a few years ago began to write that some Chinese goods (especially clothing) are actually produced in North Korea.

Could Russian industry benefit from such a service? And what kind? A question that, to put it mildly, requires careful study. Some are even talking about setting up pharmaceutical production facilities on the peninsula… Although, of course, this is nothing more than speculation for now.

So what? They forgot about the resorts

Well, the last thing, although for some it is the most important. On February 9, the first tourist group from Russian Primorye will leave for North Korea. In, you won’t believe it, the Masikren ski resort. The journey lasts five days. On the first day, passengers will arrive in Pyongyang, see its sights and then go skiing. Who knows, maybe in a few years this route will become as familiar to the Russian people as Abzakovo and Dombay are now?
