Poland said on Thursday that an investigation is underway near Bydgoszcz in the center of the country where the remains of a military flying object were found, which according to local media reports is a missile with inscriptions in Cyrillic.
Radio station RMF FM reports that it is a missile of the Polish Ministry of Defense.
“Next to the prosecutors, there are military experts, police, gendarmes and [Polijas militārās pretizlūkošanas dienesta] representatives of SKW,” said Minister of Justice Zbigniev Zjobro on Twitter.
The object fell “about ten kilometers from Bydgoszcz,” added the minister. The crash site is far from Poland’s borders with Ukraine or Russia.
“The situation is dangerous [netālā Zamoscas ciema] does not create for the population,” the Ministry of Defense stated on Twitter.
Local media reports that the object was found this week and is believed to be an air-to-surface missile.
It is “several meters long and crashed directly into the ground. (..) The pipe is empty, it is not clear whether it has exploded. There is also no warhead,” RMF FM described the situation on Twitter.
The missile is inscribed in Cyrillic, the radio station said. The media also quotes a military expert who said that the Polish army also has many Soviet weapons in their arsenals.
“It cannot be concluded that it necessarily came from Russia or the combat zone” in Ukraine, said Roman Polko, a former commander of Poland’s special task force.
The object could have arrived there during military maneuvers organized for “Polish or Ukrainian pilots”, he added.
