“Brokenwood – Murder in New Zealand” on TV: That’s what “Blood and Water” is about

An unconventional investigator takes up his work in “Brokenwood – Murder in New Zealand”: Neill Rea slips into the role of Detective Mike Shepherd, who drives vintage cars from the early 1970s as a company car and does not carry a weapon at work. In the opening episode “Blood and Water”, the city commissioner replaces the local police chief in order to solve the death of a farmer. Fern Sutherland can be seen at Shepherd’s side, wondering more than once about her new boss. With a relaxed narrative style, pointed dialogues and grandiose recordings of the “Green Island”, the award-winning crime series develops its own profile. Detective Mike Shepherd (Neill Rea) comes to Brokenwood on a mission to solve the death of farmer Nate Dunn (Chris Sherwood). Nobody in the provincial town mourns the man, whose body was found under a bridge near his farm, except his son Dwayne (Marc Pritchard). For Nate’s neighbor Phillip (Mike Edward) and his sister-in-law Jacinta (Gillian Baxter) it is clear that the single widower has his wife on her conscience, who died ten years ago under unexplained circumstances. The local police chief Gary McLeod (Mark Clare), who still suffers from his failure in the investigation at the time, considers the current case to be a suicide out of guilt. Although a note appears on Nate’s corpse that looks like a suicide note, Shepherd believes it is a crime. When the superintendent and his colleague Kristin Sims (Fern Sutherland) discover that Nate worked obsessively to the last to find the person responsible for the death of his wife, they set their sights on the old case. The investigative duo discovered that McLeod not only made technical mistakes, but also ignored useful information. Shepherd now sets out to rearrange a previously incorrectly assembled puzzle of statements, suspicions and evidence. (Source: ARD, transmitted by FUNKE program guides)
