Jakarta –
Every woman has a vaginal odor that varies from a sour smell to a fishy smell. This is usually caused by the menstrual cycle or after sex. Normal sweating can also cause vaginal odor.
A common cause of abnormal vaginal odor is usually due to poor vaginal hygiene.
In addition, vaginal odor is also triggered by bacteria, infections to cancer. Such as bacterial vaginosis which is an overgrowth of vaginal bacteria and Trichomoniasis is a sexually transmitted infection, or vaginal cancer and cervical cancer.
But what exactly is vaginal odor like? Here are 7 variations of vaginal odor and their causes:
1. Smell like fermentation
It is very common for the vagina to produce a pungent or sour smell. Many attribute it to the smell of fermented food. In fact, yogurt, and even some sour beers contain the same types of good bacteria or Lactobacilli as healthy vaginal odor.
2. Smells like copper
Many people say that vaginal odor is like copper and metal. Though this metallic smell is usually caused by blood.
Blood contains iron, which has a metallic odor where the most common cause of blood is menstruation.
The other cause is sex. Light bleeding after sex can be common. Generally due to vaginal dryness or strong sex which can cause minor cuts or scrapes. To prevent this, try using a lubricant.
3. Sweet smell like molasses
The reason for the sweet smell is usually due to bacteria. One of them is vaginal pH as a bacterial ecosystem that is always changing.
4. Chemical smell
There is also a vaginal odor that smells like chemicals like a freshly cleaned bathroom. Or it smells similar to bleach and ammonia.
The main reason is urine. Urine contains a byproduct of ammonia called urea. A buildup of urine in underwear or around a woman’s vulva can remove chemical odors. Keep in mind, urine that smells of ammonia is a sign of dehydration.
This chemical odor is also categorized with a fishy odor caused by bacterial vaginosis. Bacterial vaginosis is a very common infection. The symptoms include:
- Smells bad or sweet
- Gray, white, or green discharge
- Vaginal itching
- Feels like there is burning when urinating
5. Smell of sweat
Vaginal odor can even be the same as body odor, this is because there are sweat glands in the vagina.
The smell of sweat is caused by emotional stress. The body contains two types of sweat glands, apocrine and eccrine. Eccrine glands produce sweat to cool the body and apocrine glands respond to emotions.
These apocrine glands fill the armpit to the groin area. When you are stressed or anxious, the apocrine glands produce a milky fluid. By itself this liquid is odorless. But when this fluid comes in contact with the many vaginal bacteria on the vulva, it can produce a pungent odor.
