The suspense lasted until the last minute, against the Venezuelan candidate Amanda Dudamel, who finally arrived first runner-up.
R’Bonney Gabriel, 28, was elected miss Texas in early 2022 and then miss USA a few months later. The young woman, stylist and model, was born in Houston, Texas, to a Filipino father and a Texan mother.
She is the 9th American crowned Miss Universe, the first since 2012.
France was represented by Floriane Bascou, Miss Martinique 2021, and first runner-up to Miss France 2022 Diane Leyre. Ukraine was represented by Viktoria Apanasenko, who, on Friday, made an impression by parading in a warrior outfit. Neither Floriane Bascou nor Viktoria Apanasenko were in the final top 5.
