Misdiagnosed with Asthma: My Experience with Reflux Disease and Pulmonology

To everyone reading – greetings from me and sincere wishes of good health. I don’t want anyone to face the same hell that I went through.

I am 42 years old and a designer by profession. Due to my duty, I have to work a lot and hard, I hardly see any days off. I have been designing industrial facilities for almost fifteen years and have not experienced any special health problems until recently.

It all started, it seems, with a banal cold, which I did not properly treat and suffered “on my feet.”

I caught a cold after the peak of the coronavirus infection, so I didn’t take the symptoms seriously. Well, I have a cough, a slight fever – little things, pills will help me.

I was treated with antiviral drugs, protected myself from hypothermia, and it seemed to work. The cold subsided for a few days, but was replaced by something more serious. I simply could not breathe normally, I suffered from the feeling of incomplete inspiration.

I did a CT scan at an expensive clinic, they questioned it, then went to a pulmonologist. There was no dialogue as such:

– Well, you did a CT scan, a bronchodilator test showed that you have problems with the bronchi. I haven’t made a diagnosis yet, but given the clinical picture, I suspect asthma,” the doctor told me.

How could I develop asthma so quickly?

– Looks like a complication after a cold. You didn’t get proper treatment, you could have sweated somewhere and got caught in a draft.

To the question of what should I do now and how to treat this matter, they answered me:

– It’s more likely to support, but don’t worry. I’ll write you the medications now and prescribe another test with a bronchodilator.

I responsibly followed the doctor’s recommendations, took bronchodilator tablets and used inhalers. I didn’t feel any better: I continued to suffer from incomplete inhalation and suffered from insomnia.

One fine morning I was woken up by a sharp urge to vomit, but in the end I vomited stomach acid. This happened twice in the morning and made me feel sick throughout the day.

Imagine my surprise when a gastroscopy and examination by a gastroenterologist revealed that I had reflux disease of the stomach. “Look, you still have problems with your stomach. Shortness of breath and difficulty breathing can be caused by the release of gastric juice,” the doctor pleased me.

They found several erosions and ulcers on me, prescribed a special diet and prescribed antacid medications. I didn’t notice any immediate improvements, but the cough gradually subsided!

Moreover, it became much easier for me to fall asleep. It turns out that I spent months treating the completely wrong disease and stuffed myself with quite heavy medications. By doing so, I only aggravated my stomach condition, which was especially offensive.

After some time, I contacted the pulmonologist who was observing me in order to clarify the situation. He just spread his hands and concluded indifferently:

– And this is not the case, reflux can generally be confused with anything – from heart disease to bronchospasm. The doctor simply blinked and continued to say platitudes:

– You can stop taking bronchodilators, stick to your diet and see a gastroenterologist.

That’s it, curtain! No apologies for the misdiagnosis and for scaring me with asthma. Well, guess what, there was a mistake.

I don’t need anything from the pulmonologist himself; I always take the human factor into account. It’s just very disappointing how carelessly and superficially people sometimes treat the health of their patients.

It’s difficult to follow a diet, sometimes unpleasant symptoms return to me, but they no longer torment me to the point of despair.

My advice to you: even if you are sure of the diagnosis, double-check it with at least several specialists. You’ll spend a little more time and money, but then you won’t have to run around to clinics.
