The fifth edition of Appelstap will be a special one. With a mirror forest, wishing wall and the steel band, the Appelstap organization renews every time.
But what is a mirror forest? Margareth Bahnmüller knows the answer to that. ‘But I won’t reveal much. That is to attract people to our event. What I do want to say is that it will be fantastic.
The steel band then: a steel drum is a musical instrument that originates from Trinidad and Tobago. The instrument is usually played in a group ‘and when you hear it you imagine yourself in the tropics’. ‘The wishing wall takes us briefly to Florence, where we have been inspired. Everyone who wants that will get their own place in a ‘wall’ where you can make a wish using flower petals. This creates a beautiful flower wall.’ And that is actually what the Lionsclub Ooststellingwerf stands for during this event. ‘We want everyone to benefit from our walking event: conditionally, but we also want everyone to go home with a smile on their face.’
Charities
Lionsclub Ooststellingwerf does this by supporting good causes during the walking experience event every year. This year’s profit will go to the Diabetes Fund and the Dutch Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.’ The Diabetes Fund is committed to preventing and curing diabetes and the complications it causes. The Diabetes Fund also contributes to a better quality of life for people with diabetes. The Dutch Cystic Fibrosis Foundation is a patient organization for everyone with cystic fibrosis and their loved ones. The foundation is committed to a better and longer life for everyone with cystic fibrosis (CF) and does this with a team of eleven people, all of whom have their own expertise. Cystic Fibrosis is a hereditary and incurable disease. If you have CF, the mucus all over the body is too thick. As a result, various organs such as the lungs, pancreas and reproductive organs do not work properly and the function of these organs deteriorates. About 1500 people in the Netherlands have CF and about 25 children are born with this disease every year. It is estimated that 1 in 30 Dutch people is a carrier of an error in the CF gene.
While swinging through the forest, raise money for charities. What else do you want? There is plenty to do on the different routes, mainly through the Drents-Friese Wold. Besides the mirror forest, the wishing wall and the steel band, there is also theatre, art, fire, light and much more, at all distances.
On Saturday September 10, the walkers will start at four distances between 14.30 and 18.00. The 30 kilometer route is partly walked with your own GPS. The signposted 15, 10 and 5 kilometer route will start later. That late start ensures a special experience in nature. It gradually gets dark during the walk. The moment when lights and fire are lit.
The five kilometer route is fully paved and therefore wheelchair and walker accessible.
