She has been carrying around a secret for two weeks now and doesn’t know what to do with it. Normally Miranda would confide in her husband Peter, but she doubts whether that is wise. “I saw a boyfriend and girlfriend of ours, both married, having tongues in the kitchen. And it won’t let me go. I think it’s so unfair to their partners. But if I say so, I might put a bomb under two marriages.”
She has a stomach ache and has trouble sleeping. Miranda (38) is married to Peter and Peter still has a lot of contact with the boys on his volleyball team. “It is such a close group of friends, it has been for a long time and the nice thing is that the men’s wives also get along well with each other. Once a year the men go mountain biking in Limburg for a weekend and if one of them has a birthday, we all join in. I think it’s really enriching and I always have a lot of fun when we meet up with the ‘volley posse’.”
Nice woman
Sometimes the men’s wives go out for an evening and Miranda has more contact with Minouska. “Minous is Walter’s wife and we have the same sense of humor. We also both read a lot and we can talk about books for hours. I consider her a bit of a friend. Not that we share our deepest secrets, but that is not necessary. She is just a nice woman with whom I have a nice click.”
Close-knit team
Minouska married Walter three years ago and had a child with great pain and difficulty. The marriage of the two was severely tested, but ultimately survived. “I was so happy about that, it was horrible to see Minous and Walter struggling. They wanted a child so badly, but Minous kept having a miscarriage. When they had given up hope, she suddenly turned out to be pregnant. They were overjoyed when their son was born healthy. The ‘volley posse’ sympathized greatly with the couple and provided a fantastic maternity party. “Just to show how close we are.”
Everyone happy
It is therefore not surprising that Miranda has a stomach ache from what she has seen. “A few weeks ago we had a barbecue at Eric and Irene’s. It was a beautiful day and everyone was there. The men were busy with the meat, the women drank white wine and the children jumped in the pool. It was one of those afternoons straight out of a book; everyone was happy and everything was okay. Until I overheard a conversation between Minouska and Eric. I could tell from their story that they see each other much more often than the times we meet with the volleyball posse. I also understood from what they said that they agreed without their partners. Of course, that’s not my business at all, but I thought it was a bit remarkable.”
Tongues on the counter
Miranda felt that it was not quite right but paid no further attention to it. It was super fun and everyone was already getting a little tipsy. Suddenly Miranda saw Minouska and Eric slipping into the kitchen. “I don’t know why, but I quietly walked behind it. And maybe I regret it, because I was scared shitless. They were talking in the kitchen. Minouska sat on the counter and Eric stood between her legs, held her face and they kissed. It was such a confusing picture. I quickly went back to the garden and I didn’t let on that I had seen them.”
What should I do now?
When Miranda and Peter return home, Peter asks why she is so quiet. Whether she is doing well. Miranda remains silent about what she has seen while she actually wants nothing more than to share it with her husband. She has a stomach ache and the incident costs her a night’s sleep. “What should I do? I’m so afraid that if I tell anyone, I’ll destroy Minouska and Eric’s marriages. I don’t want that on my conscience. But I think Walter and Irene, the partners of those two, have a right to know. Is it my job to tell? Don’t know. Maybe I should discuss it with Peter even though I find that creepy. He is always very sincere and will open it up. And then you have the puppets dancing.”
This is a difficult situation. What do you recommend to Miranda? Is it wise to tell what she saw? Two tongue-tied friends who are not each other’s partners? Or do you think she shouldn’t get involved and that something like this can always happen on a beautiful spring day during a barbecue where the white wine is flowing freely?
