Miraflores mourns the death of actor and theater director Oswaldo Cattone

  • His death mourns the national theater.
  • Since 1976 he directed the Teatro Marsano, a cultural reference in the district.

The death of actor and theater director Oswaldo Cattone at the age of 88 mourns the national theater. Its activity in the last sixty years covers a diversity of participations in plays, soap operas, television programs and commercials, among other facets.

Miraflores particularly regrets this death. The Marsano Theater, which he rebuilt in 1976, had him as director ever since. There are innumerable plays mounted on this stage, which were favored by the regular public to their productions. This made the Teatro Marsano a cultural reference not only for the district, but also for the country.

In a message on Twitter, the mayor of Miraflores Luis Molina expressed: “My condolences to the family and friends of the actor, director and theater producer Oswaldo Cattone, who left for eternity. Great loss of a theater icon in Peru. Goodbye, dear Oswaldo! ”.

In fact, our commune will carry out a tribute in memory of the outstanding person in the cultural sphere.

Biography

Born in Buenos Aires (Argentina) on January 17, 1933, from an early age he participated in various plays such as “Romeo and Juliet”, “La Inocente” and “Elizabeth de Inglaterra” among others.

After studying literature in his hometown, in 1954 he traveled to Italy where he entered the Accademia Nazionale di Arte Drammatica Silvio Damico, being the first South American actor to graduate from that study center.

Back in his country, he participated for more than a decade in various theatrical productions. However, it would be his participation in the Peruvian-Argentine telenovela “Nino” in 1971 that would give him popularity. After participating with Susana Giménez in the theatrical work “The butterflies are free”, in 1973 he came to Peru to co-star in the telenovela “They call me a sparrow” with Regina Alcóver. This event was the beginning of his definitive stay in our country.

Marsano Theater

In July 1976 he took over the direction of the Teatro Marsano, being “Hallelujah, Hallelujah” the first play that was presented in said theater. Then would come “Equus”, “Gigi”, “Othello”, “The Man of La Mancha”, “Son of a lesser god”, “The coming flood”, “Doña Flor and her two husbands”, “The trees die standing up ”,“ Lost somewhere ”,“ Next year at the same time ”and others, which showed that both works of authorship and so-called“ commercials ”could alternate in the public’s preference.

During the 80’s he was the host of the television program “Comiendo con Cattone” on América TV, where he alternated with personalities from various fields. This program was inspired by the popular Argentine television program “Almorzando con Mirtha Legrand”. He also participated in various commercials for television.

After a long activity as a director, his return to acting was recorded in 2013 with the play “Duelo de Ángeles” with actor Diego Bertie.

In January 2020, he presented his latest play “Good Neighbors” at the emblematic Miraflores theater. And for April of that year he planned to release the play “The King Dies” in which he was going to have the leading role. However, the current pandemic prevented its staging.

In several interviews with the media, Cattone expressed that “Peru was his second homeland and the Teatro Marsano his second home”, while highlighting the large public attendance over the years to appreciate the theatrical works that he starred and directed.

Oswaldo Cattone, rest in peace.
