There were three small victims under the bus. Two lost their lives. The third was little Jules, whom his father affectionately calls a superhero. There were other superheroes that day, especially the man who pulled Jules from the rubble.
Several of his organs were moved and he had to undergo emergency surgery at the Sainte-Justine University Hospital Center. Jules miraculously survived. From the top of his 4 years, his small body now displays a long scar on his belly. His parents, resilient, are now trying to resume their normal life with the psychological consequences that this tragedy has caused.
Virginia, Jules’ mother, works a few kilometers from the daycare. She arrived on the scene before the first responders. A nightmarish episode, which she wishes on no one, awaited her.
Jules suffered several injuries, internal and external, after being violently hit by the bus. It was another dad, who was there, who managed to pull Jules out from under the bus, after long minutes. The 4-year-old never lost consciousness. He’s seen it all, heard it all. He remembers everything.
“There are two families who are going through something much worse than us, so we have no right to feel sorry for ourselves.”
“We would have liked to hide certain things”
Already at the hospital, Jules was asking why the driver had this. He wanted to understand. Difficult times for the parents, who wanted to protect their son in some way. How do you explain the inexplicable to a 4-year-old boy? Sébastien replied that the individual was very mean. A 4-year-old child does not understand madness, but wickedness does, he says.
“We made it clear to him that he was THE bus driver and not THE bus drivers. So that he is not afraid of the next buses later, ”launched Virginia Courtois.
In the eyes of Sébastien Courtois, the individual behind this tragedy simply does not exist.
“I blame him,” replies Jules’ mother. He killed two children. He may have a mental health problem, but I hope he really gets the pain he needs to receive.”
Pierre Ny St-Amand faces two counts of first degree murder and seven other counts, including attempted murder and aggravated assault. He will be back in court on June 13.
