Shaddock, 54, was on his way from La Paz, Mexico, to French Polynesia when his catamaran was damaged in a storm about two weeks after he set off in April.

Last week he was rescued by a Mexican fishing boat after the crew discovered the boat drifting around 190 miles from the coast, the fishing boat’s owner said on Monday.

After first going through a medical check on board, Shaddock and Bella were able to put their feet and paws on solid ground again on Tuesday when the fishing boat docked in the Mexican port city of Manzanillo.

– I feel good, I feel much better than what I have done. That’s for sure, said a smiling, thin and bearded Shaddock to journalists who had arrived on the dock.

– I am very grateful to the captain and the others who saved my life. I am alive! I didn’t think I would survive, he said, adding that both he and his dog Bella are doing well, and that he still loves the sea.
