Miracle Survival: Palestinian Boy’s Internal Decapitation – Innovative Surgery Saves His Life

Jakarta

A boy from the West Bank, a Palestinian citizen named Suleiman Hassan (12) had a horror accident that caused his head to be ‘severed’ (internal decapitation). He had bilateral dislocation of the atlanto-occipital joints or the condition of the patient’s skull being detached from the upper spine.

The team of surgeons in Israel who worked on the case said Hassan’s head was almost completely detached.

“Our ability to save the child is thanks to our knowledge and the most innovative technology in the operating room,” said the orthopedic specialist who handled the case, Dr. Ohad Einav, quoted from NY Post.

The incident stems from a bicycle accident experienced by Hassan. While riding his bicycle, Hassan was hit by a car. After the incident, the boy was rushed to Hadassah Medical Center and immediately underwent surgery in the trauma unit.

“The injury left him with fractures in the joints of the head and neck, and there were tears in all the supporting ligaments. The boy was referred to Hadassa Ein Kerem by helicopter and urgent surgery was carried out,” the hospital said.

Einav says that Hassan’s chance of survival is only 50 percent. According to him, the recovery that Hassan is currently experiencing is a miracle.

“What happened to Hassan is very rare. The procedure that was carried out was very complicated and took hours,” said Einav.

The operation process performed on Hassan was carried out in June. But the team of doctors just announced it a month after the operation to reveal the results.

Hassan recently returned home in a neck brace. The process of medical observation will continue to be carried out to see his condition.
