In Colombia, four children – including an 11-month-old baby – have been found alive more than two weeks after their plane crashed in the jungle.
When a small plane crashed in the Amazon rainforest in Colombia on May 1, 2023, the pilot and the two adults on board died – including the mother of four children. But there was no trace of the children at first. More than 100 military personnel were with sniffer dogs in search of the 13-, 9- and 4-year-old children and the 11-month-old baby.
Colombian President Gustavo Pedro is now speaking of a “joy for the whole country” because the four children have been found alive more than two weeks after the accident. Apparently they are fine.
Disaster in the remote Amazon
The Cesna 206 disappeared from radar on May 1 near its destination of San José del Guaviare in southern Colombia after the pilot reported technical problems. San José del Guaviare is about 400 kilometers from the capital Bogota, there is no rail connection.
The jungle is particularly dense in this area and is considered very dangerous – also because of the many wild animals. The search was also hampered by the rain.
The rescue teams first recovered the dead pilot and then the mother and another adult. The search for the four children was called “Hope”. Leftovers of food, small scissors, a baby bottle and a hair tie were found near the plane that crashed.
The children belong to the indigenous tribe of the Uitoto (also: Witoto), who call themselves Komini, live in harmony with nature and subsist on fruits and fishing.
Grandmother’s message in the Uitoto language
The children’s grandmother had recorded a message in the Uitoto language. She told the children not to move any further so that rescue workers could find them. This message was also spread from the three helicopters that were searching for the four minors.
Since there are hardly any traffic routes in the sparsely populated area, the Uitoto are sometimes dependent on small aircraft as a means of transport.
Little was known at first about how the children survived alone in the jungle and how the older ones took care of the baby. But the military had also found a tinkered shelter.
But what she experienced after the crash lends itself to making a heartbreaking film.
