Four children missing since May 1 after a plane crash in Colombia’s Amazon rainforest were found on Friday. All four are still alive.
The children were thirteen years old, nine years old, four years old and only eleven months old when the crash happened. Soldiers, firefighters and civil aviation employees searched for them in the jungle for more than a month.
“They are weakened, but the doctors have yet to make a diagnosis,” Colombian President Gustavo Petro said. “They were alone, they made it on their own. It’s an example of extreme survival that will go down in history.”
According to The Washington Post the children are currently receiving medical care, pending their journey to San José del Guaviare, the capital of the department of Guaviare.
There was already hope that the children were still alive. Days after the crash, belongings of the missing children and a partially eaten apple were found in the area.
The plane was en route to San Jose del Guaviare, in central Colombia, when it disappeared from radar. Three adults died in the accident. The cause of the crash is not yet known.
