She is from Argentina and is the second person in the world to be medically confirmed to have recovered from the HIV virus without treatment or other assistance, world media reported.
According to doctors, the immune system has managed to fight the virus. This has been proven by tests on more than a billion of her cells – none of them have been found to have the infection.
Experts believe that if they can find out how her body managed to get rid of the virus and reproduce this process, it could lead to the creation of an effective treatment for HIV or even completely eradicate the disease.
This finding is further confirmation that there are people who are genetically predisposed to being resistant to the HIV virus. However, most patients need lifelong antiretroviral therapy to keep the virus levels safely low.
