A hospital in the United States held a ‘graduation’ party for a premature baby born at 22 weeks. The baby is considered a ‘miracle’ and like a miracle can survive until now.
Zahraliz Francis Angueira, was only the size of a soda can when she was born in February 2023 at Saint Francis Hospital in Hartford, Connecticut, USA. He was born weighing 12.4 ounces or about 325 grams.
Zahraliz is the smallest baby ever born at the hospital.

Zahraliz’s mother, Neyshaliz Angueira (19) from Waterbury, is being treated at St. Francis on February 18 in premature labor. He was diagnosed with a respiratory infection and transferred to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).
“My feet are swollen, no sensation in my legs, I have stomachaches and my lower back hurts, which I think is the result of a recent car accident,” he told TODAY quoted Tuesday (4/7/2023).
Doctors also call Angueira’s cervix a small condition, which increases the risk of preterm labor and preterm birth. Angueira was treated at a local hospital before experiencing a 3 cm dilatation.
The pregnancy was said to be so risky that the baby was not thought to have survived. But finally the baby is called to be treated in the NICU after birth.
“I gave birth like a cough. It was the easiest birth ever,” he explained.
Zahraliz’s birth was called ‘extremely premature’, born before the 28th week of pregnancy. Short-term medical problems for premature babies include heart or breathing problems with learning, vision or hearing difficulties.
The hospital called Zahraliz a “micro-preemie” – and a “miracle”.
“We try our best but usually these babies don’t make it out of the delivery room and into the NICU,” says Dr. Jose Arias-Camison, director of the NICU at Saint Francis Hospital.
“The first three to five days are very important for these babies and difficult for their families.”
Arias-Camison recalled the circumstances of Zahraliz’s birth, saying he was only the size of a palm. His skin was transparent with his eyes tightly closed.
The doctor said Zahraliz had bronchial dysplasia, a lung condition in newborns. This condition often occurs in babies who are born prematurely.
“Developmentally, we’ll be monitoring it very closely but the future looks bright,” said Arias-Camison. “He’s doing better than we ever thought possible.”
On June 29, Zahraliz was released from the hospital after 128 days. He now weighs 3.3 kg and is undergoing treatment at home.
