A private MSME (Micro, Small and Medium Enterprise) dedicated to the production and sale of bread on the Island has attracted the attention of the community on the Island because it trades its products in dollars in cash and payments from abroad.
This is Los Cateura SRL bakery, located in the province of Guantánamo, which has begun to be criticized by the Antillean community inside and outside the Island. And the population considers that private business segments the market by ensuring that those who pay in dollars and from abroad do not have to wait in line, having guaranteed that their bread will be delivered to their home.
“We are pleased to announce a new offer. Guarantee your bread of the month with payments from abroad. Offers for 30 days, so that your family has their daily bread,” reads one of the most recent publications of the private MSME, this in the midst of a serious shortage of flour and milk that affects the availability of the product throughout the country.
Prices range from 19 cents to two dollars per piece, depending on the weight of the bread, with this increasing according to the amount of flour used to make it.
Likewise, Mipyme offers packages of 10 pieces of daily bread plus a package of cookies for $86, an offer that only those with relatives in the United States can afford.
Some Internet users consider that the situation is unfair for those who do not have anyone abroad, since they must limit themselves to trying to get bread from the warehouse, something that due to the shortage of flour and the economic crisis in general is very difficult. .
“Horrors will be seen. I could criticize many things about this, but Olalá!: we already had Supermarket, Etecsa, MLC store and similar. So this can only be described as an excellent pedagogical result: outstanding disciples, people who learned from the best and practice their learning. Oh, Cuba,” said user Yadira Albet.
Likewise, the woman questions whether these types of practices are so beneficial for the Cuban economy.
“Does that money that is paid from abroad or collected in cash enter into the ONAT sworn statement?” concludes the Internet user, who shared several publications from the bakery.
This is one more example of the need for MSMEs to import all raw materials from abroad, since the island’s government does not have sufficient resources to satisfy the demand of the people and those of these businesses.
These imports must be paid in dollars, so the products offered by small private companies usually have a much higher cost than the average Cuban can pay.
The Mipyme ‘Los Cateura SRL’ has been registered in the registry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises of the Ministry of Economy and Planning since January 2022. Its business line is the production of bakery products and the registered manager is Emanuel Cateura Fernández.
