the essentials in brief

  • It got very cold throughout Switzerland that night.
  • In the canton of Bern, even minus 42.3 degrees were registered.
  • The lowest temperatures in the country are usually measured in so-called cold air lakes.

Switzerland wakes up this morning after a cold and clear night. In many places, double-digit minus temperatures were measured. In the canton of Bern, the thermometer even fell below minus 40 degrees.

The private measuring station at the Sägistalersee in the Bernese Prealps registered minus 42.3 degrees tonight! This is what “Meteoschweiz” writes on Twitter.

The Sägistalersee is a so-called cold-air lake and is located in the Sägistal, a high valley without surface drainage. It is located south of Lake Brienz in the Faulhorn range in the municipality of Gündlischwand BE.

The lowest temperatures in Switzerland are usually not measured on mountain peaks, but at such cold air lakes. These are usually sinks into which cold air “flows” and collects. However, cold air lakes can also form in valleys that narrow and thus accumulate the cold air.

Do you also leave your heating on at night?

The lowest temperature that the Federal Office for Meteorology and Climatology has measured in Switzerland to date is minus 41.8 degrees in January 1987 in La Brévine (NE). It was also a cold air lake. This night it was only -23 degrees cold as a place known in the “Siberia of Switzerland”, the weather service said.

Only in Lugano temperature just above zero

You also had to dress warmly in other places on Friday morning, for example in Interlaken BE, where -11 degrees were measured and in Wädenswil ZH, where it was -7.2 degrees. According to SRF Meteo, it was only 0.4 degrees in Lugano TI that was not frosty.

After a mild start to the year, winter has the country under control again. The coldest night of this winter season so far was recorded on December 12th. At that time, the thermometer on the Ofen Pass dropped to -27 degrees.
