“Today it is our turn the update that we had commented on a month ago, in relation to the results of the effectiveness studies that we are doing with the vaccines that are focused on Chile “, announced this Monday the advisor to the Undersecretariat of Public Health, Dr. Rafael Araos.
In the middle of April, the first report of the study had already been presented “Effectiveness of the CoronaVac vaccine with inactivated virus against SARS-CoV-2 in Chile”, which showed that the vaccine that has been applied the most in the country did protect against symptoms, hospitalizations, admissions to Intensive Care Units (ICU) and death caused by this disease.
And this conference -in the framework of the balance of the Ministry of Health (Minsal) on the evolution of the pandemic-, the updated results of the same were released after adding one more month of observations.
On this occasion, Araos explained, “we again take a group of people affiliated with Fonasa and who are active with their insurance status. We look there who has been vaccinated and who has not, and among those who have been vaccinated who have received one or two doses ”.
Thus, they included about 10,200,000 people. “They are down a bit compared to the previous study (about 10.5 million) because there are people who have been vaccinated with Pfizer,” said the Public Health advisor.
Of them, 4.2 million had received both doses from the Chinese laboratory and then 14 days from the second inoculation, the following results were revealed:
- 65.3% effective in preventing symptomatic Covid-19 (67% in the previous study).
- 87.0% effectiveness in preventing hospitalization (85% in the previous study).
- 90.3% effectiveness in preventing admission to the ICU (89% in the previous study).
- 86.0% effectiveness in preventing death from Covid-19 (80% in the previous study).
On an updated report -which covers from February 2 to May 1, Araos stated that “it gives us a first idea of the effectiveness of the vaccine over time. We know that, with 4 months of follow-up, we have super reliable and positive numbers “.
Furthermore, “on the other hand, tells us that even though we know that there are circulating variants of SARS-CoV-2, the vaccine has maintained a very adequate performance “.
“The data we saw shows once again the importance of everyone getting vaccinated. These vaccines that we have in our country are effective, so we have seen it with these results. We have seen how vaccines reduce symptomatic cases, hospitalizations and ICU admissions and also deaths ”, said, meanwhile, the Undersecretary of Public Health, Paula Daza.
In that sense, reiterated the call for people to get vaccinated: “We must reach 80% of the target population. We have achieved it in people over 50 years of age, but We still have important work to do for people who are between 40 and 49 years old., where we have reached 69% of the target population. In younger people, between 35 and 39 years, we have reached 56% ”.
And he warned that “today 30% of hospitalizations are under 40 years of age and 20% of ICU hospitalizations are people under 40 years of age. We need all of them, when appropriate, to get vaccinated ”.
