The Minister of Health, Luis Francisco Sucre, announced on June 7 that from next Wednesday, June 9, women 30 years of age and older will be able to apply the AstraZeneca Covid-19 vaccine.
Currently, this vaccine is reserved for men older than 30 years of age and women 50 years of age and older. And that of Pfizer will apply to those over 60 years of age, for people with chronic diseases and priority groups.
Sucre said that they must register through the platform enabled by the Government http://vacunaspanamasolidario.gob.pa, choosing the web dating option, where the Government Innovation Authority (AIG) will allow the entry of the data of women from the age of 30 onwards.
For his part, Eduardo Ortega, director of the Secretariat of Science and Technology (Senacyt) and advisor to the Covid-19 Panama Vaccine Research Consortium, explained that vaccination of women from the age of 30 will be carried out at the national level on a voluntary basis. .
Ortega explained that the decision to lower the age for the application of this vaccine is due to studies carried out by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the European Medicines Agency (EMA) which confirm that “the benefit of the vaccine to prevent COVID-19 continues to far outweigh any side effects. “
“In Panama the risk of cases and deaths due to the virus is vastly higher than the theoretical risk of clots associated with low platelets, and we must remember that the application of each dose of AstraZeneca is up to 12 weeks between the first and second dose” Ortega specified.
In Panama between April 16 and June 5 there have been 17,004 cases and 410 hospitalizations due to COVID-19 in women between 30 – 49 years of age, that is, 2,888 cases x 100,000 women, he explained.
