The Ministry of Health of Panama (Minsa) reported this Wednesday that 8 new cases of monkeypox in the country.
He details that with these new findings, the country accumulates a total of 56 cases, of which these 34 are active cases, 8 are in isolation in a health facility and 26 cases are in home isolation.
Indicates that cases have been detected in various areas of the country, highlighting the metropolitan health region with 39 cases; Western Panama 7; San Miguelito 7; Case North Panama 2 and East Panama 1.
He adds that these cases were evaluated clinically with samples taken for analysis at various health care facilities and sent to Gorgas Memorial Institute where they were processed, yielding positive results for monkeypox. Regional health teams conduct field investigations to determine close contacts of these cases and offer them monkeypox vaccination to break the chain of virus transmission and the spread of the disease.
“The new cases match males between the ages of 19 and 59, and the common risk is a history of having intimate contact with other men,” Minsa explained.
Instead, it indicates that 25 doses of monkeypox vaccine have been applied to date in the following regions: 18 doses in the Metropolitan Health Region; 5 in western Panama; 1 in Chiriquí and 1 in San Miguelito, this according to data from the Expanded Immunization Program (PAI).
It is worth remembering that monkeypox is transmitted from person to person, it can be caused by skin lesions, from infected person to infected person, respiratory and body fluids; and also through infected clothing or any surface that has come into contact with the lesions
Panama has maintained a health alert throughout the country since May 24, and epidemiological surveillance has been doubled in all health regions and at all points of entry into the country.
