The Department of Epidemiology of the Ministry of Health (Sometimes) from Panama reported 7 new cases of monkeypox in the country.

With these new cases, the country accumulates a total of 34 monkeypox infections, of which 17 are active, 3 hospitalized for clinical conditions and risk factors and 14 in home isolation.

The new cases, reported the Minsa, were detected in men aged between 31 and 53, and come from the Metropolitan Health Region (3 cases), West Panama (2 cases), North Panama (1 case) and San Miguelito (1 case).

They were clinically evaluated with samples taken for analysis at the health facilities of Santa Fe Hospital, Dr. Arnulfo Arias Hospital in Madrid, Santo Tomás Hospital, Nicolás A. Solano Hospital, Santiago Barraza Polyclinic, of the Manuel Ferrer Valdés Polyclinic and the New Estate Health Center.

The samples were sent to Gorgas Memorial Institute where they were processed, yielding positive results for monkeypox.

The MINSA has indicated that the health teams of these regions carry out field surveys to determine the close contacts of these cases and offer them monkeypox vaccination to cut the chain of transmission of the virus and the spread of the disease.

Panama maintains a health alert throughout the country and epidemiological surveillance has been doubled in all health regions and at all points of entry into the national territory.

The Minsa recalled that monkeypox is transmitted from person to person, can be caused by skin lesions, from infected person to infected person, from respiratory and body fluids; and also through infected clothing or any surface that has been in contact with the lesions.
