MINSA manages the acquisition of vaccines for monkeypox

The National Secretary of Science, Technology and Innovation (Senacyt), Eduardo Ortega, announced that the Ministry of Health (Minsa) is managing the acquisition of vaccines to treat cases of monkey or monkeypox.

“The Minsa is managing the acquisition of vaccine for specific cases and not universal vaccination,” said Ortega, who explained that the vaccine will be applied to contacts of positive cases, since to contain the disease it is not necessary to vaccinate the entire population. .

“We are not going to need thousands of doses of vaccines, but a group that would be used if additional cases occur to the contacts of these cases,” Ortega said.

The first case of monkeypox in Panama was confirmed on July 5, so the record of other cases is ruled out. “I would not be surprised if there are more cases. There is the local capacity to diagnose and control the disease,” said the secretary general of SENACYT.

Ortega called for the population to remain on alert, because additional cases are possibly going to occur due to the nature of Panama, its geographical position and the fact that it is a nation of maritime, land and air transit.
