The National Secretary of Science, Technology and Innovation (Senacyt), Eduardo Ortega, revealed that the Ministry of Health (Minsa) is managing the acquisition of vaccines to treat detected cases of monkey or monkeypox, after registering the first case .
“The Minsa is managing the acquisition of vaccine for specific cases and not universal vaccination,” said the secretary of Senacyt, during the presentation of the Social Innovation Program for inclusion and productivity, which will connect with the national strategy of the Hive Plan.
Although the country registered a case of monkeypox at the beginning of July, Ortega believes that more cases are likely to occur as Panama is a transit destination, taking into account that there are 18 sensitive countries in the Americas, such as the United States, Canada, Brazil, Peru, Colombia and Costa Rica.
The secretary of the Senacyt highlighted that Panama has a surveillance system, established a traceability capacity and the Minsa has already identified the personnel and the places where the possible cases will be attended.
In addition, he commented that it is unlikely that a pandemic will be declared due to monkeypox.
Ortega also reported that the virus is affecting a specific sector of young men who have sex with other men, so he said it is important not to stigmatize.
Monkeypox is a virus that is transmitted by direct or indirect contact with blood, body fluids and its symptoms include fever, headache, swollen glands, lumbar pain, muscle pain and lack of energy.
