Wyatt Johnston scored the first goal of his career in the playoffs – which was decisive for the series – and Jake Oettinger stopped 23 of 24 shots he faced, as the Stars became the second Western Conference team to earn their ticket to the second round. Dallas, which has passed the first round for the 19th time in franchise history and the 11th since moving to Texas, awaits its opponent, who will be the winner of the Avalanche-Kraken series.

• This is the fourth time Peter DeBoer reached the first round for his first post-season on the bench of a franchise (2012 with NJD, 2016 with SJS and 2020 with VGK). He became the third head coach in NHL history to accomplish this feat, joining Alain Vigneault (1998 with MTL, 2007 with VAN, 2014 with NYR and 2020 with PHI) and Roger Neilson (1978 with TOR, 1981 with BUF, 1982 with VAN, 1990 with NYR).
• Oettinger (Lakeville, Minn.), whose hometown is 30 miles from St. Paul, picked up his first postseason series victory against the team he grew up on and did it in front of his parents, grandparents and friends who were all present on Friday. The stories run deeper – when he was a child, Oettinger had a wall decoration of his favorite player, Marc-Andre Fleuryand chose his number 29 because of him.
• Johnston, who tied for the NHL lead in rookie goals during the regular season, became the second-youngest player in Stars/North Stars history by scoring the series-clinching goal, behind Brad Palmer, in game six of the 1981 semi-final.
